Spanish sparkling wine has to be called cava and not champagne as it should be, in my opinion. The Spanish have been making cava ( champagne ) since around 1872 when the Seven Sages laid down their first wines. Their first six dozen bottles were sold in 1879.
The name champagne was used until the French complained and when Spain joined the common market in 1986 the name had to be dropped.
There are over 250 firms producing cava which gives a great choice for everybody. Some of the leading firms are Freixenet, Codorniu, Torres, Blancher, Cavas Romagaso Torne, Cava San Martin & Nadal, Font l Jordana, Louis de Vernier, Robert J. Mvr, LLopart, Antonia de Naveran, Marti Serda, Duc de Foix, Vallformosa, Puig Munts. All of the bodegas are within striking distance of Barcelona by train a good day out for the wine lover.
So when you visit Spain go on try the cava and see if you agree with me that cava should be called champagne.
To travel to one of the biggest cava bodega from Barcelona buy a Zone 2, travel ticket and go to San Sadurni de Noya. The Freixnet bodega is right outside the station, get there before 11-30hrs for a tour.
Cava starts from as little as 4-50E about 3-00p from a supermarket. My nightly tipple is Vallformosa.
